The Valley of the Alagón is an open valley whose representative nucleus is Coria.

Coria is one of these cities which had an enormous and vital economic importance in the sector where it is marked. Its glorious past is written in each architectonic detail, its streets, of the castles and the temples. That is worth the sorrow to make a small pause on the way and to approach to admire one of the more important chapters of the history of high Extremadura.

The origin of Coria we must seek it far in time, for century VI before J-C One tells that it was built to be used as capital in Vettones, populates Celtic who was marked in the most Western buttresses of the central system. Its name derives precisely from that which it has since this precise moment: Caura.

As from 2nd century before Christ the Roman invasion occurs. Vettones will plant vis-à-vis with the enemy while taking as combined to its neighbours from Portugal. The name of Viriato was very attached always to this ground and its exploits are still counted like clean. The Roman heritage was important. They create the Way of Dalmacia, intended to link the towns of Caurium (Roman Name which was given after Coria), Emerita August and Mirobriga, although the most important work civil that they concluded was the impressive wall which was used as refuge at the city. We can still consider in a very good state of conservation the doors of the Sun and the City, both flanked by two quadrangular turns of irrepressible aspect.

For the Roman period its influence and importance had to be large, because little time close having to begin the Christian era it was directly declared Episcopal see. This fact will contribute on the one hand significantly to increase its architectonic inheritance and by another to increase the importance which exerted already on the entire zone.

Between the elements which conform this inheritance we can underline the castle, building military which it is built like symbol of the feudal capacity and whose tower of the homage appears to have left one of these stories of knights, but especially, the Cathedral, whose figure is presented majestic considering the traveller that city approaches. It began its construction on the southern scrap of the wall, at the end of at the end of the 14th century. Its structure is marked on powerful walls which support only one ship of extraordinary beauty. It is one this monument which we cannot cease visiting.

With the Cathedral we find two other buildings of special importance, the Episcopal Palate and the Palate of the Dukes of Paddle. To their feet we can walk on the bridge of Roman origin whose way is dry, being given the deviation of the original course of the Alagón river (for this reason one calls him the Dry Bridge). If we wish to know a little more on the history of this city we must approach in Museum the Real Prison, where one shows several collections of epigraphic Roman, the Jurisdiction Coria, in addition to several temporary talks of various types. Coria preserves, moreover, of the indices of its past Hebrew (Street Synagogue), and formed part of made up network of Jew’s districts, which groups with a good number of populations from Cáceres and Portuguese.

Two notes to finish this short course more. Of a great fame in the area are Sanjuanes de Coria. Declared national tourist interest, this festivity is narrowly in connection with the figure of the bull and takes place between June the 23 and 29. And not very far there one finds another of the natural zones of Estrémadure, declared zone of special protection of birds (ZEPA): Rubbers of Ramiro.
