CORIA CATHEDRAL. HIGH EXTREMADURA.

From the left to the right. The illuminated cathedral. Pótico del Evangelio.

On a hill, its magestuosa silhouette, Sta. Maria de la Asunción Cathedral.

Coria has the important historical inheritance, but the reference symbol of the town of Coria is its Cathedral of Sta. María of the Assumption of responsibility, artistic historic building since 1931. He envoy to build to him the bishop Pedro Ximénez de Préxamo.

Its silhouette is seen since the distance, while guiding with the visitor.

The construction of the Cathedral starts at the end of century XIV and lasts three centuries. The result is a mixture of several artistic styles.

Important and powerful walls, only one very vast ship and of the safe deposits with broken veining. The ship has side hoods and in the centre of this one raises the chorus, of Plateresc style and with blazing seats Gothic, closed with the public by an artistic grid.

It had to exist a preceding Gothic Cathedral disappeared now, of which there remained to us his Gothic cloister, from announced arcs and safe deposit in the interior galleries, is leaned with the northern part of the Cathedral.

In the 18th century one builds the tower of the Cathedral and like, designed by Manuel of Lara Churriguera. From this time they are the pinnacles and balustrades as guards of the large ship. The tower will be rebuilt after being damaged by the seism of Lisbon of 1755.

The large hood is also closed by a grid of century XVIII. In him the challengeable baroque is underlined, with some sculptures which underline by their beauty, that of the Assumption of responsibility and that of Piety, like some remarkable tombs by their monumentalise, like that of Ximénez Préxamo and of the bishop himself García de Galarza.

The Cathedral has two gates worthy of mention. The septentrional gate, mainly in Gothic matter but with elements of decoration from the Rebirth. Its Plateresc decoration is formed especially by medallions, grotesques, watershed, etc. The Western gate is formed by three bodies, its manners are of Plateresc style. The flame of the Door of Forgiveness is most monumental of all. It was conceived by Pedro d' Ibarra. In it scenes of the Annunciation, Nativity and the Epiphany appear a sculpture of the Virgin and the image of the Our Heavenly Father. Here also appear represented historical characters like Cleopatra and Antoine Cadre. Its decorative elements are medallions, guirnaldas, querubines, grutescos, angels, warriors, etc.

With the northern gate also called Gospel, one finds the Balcony called of the Relics, where it showed in the past the tablecloth of the Crowned Dinner, and which today formed part of the relics of the museum of the cathedral. The Cathedral counts also majestic bodies.

The museum of the cathedral gathers an important sample of the religious art: sculptural painting, goldsmithery, heights, etc.

The bells of the Cathedral of Coria are an invaluable play of splendid sonority. There are four large, three small, and a set of Easter, which are four in the same yoke.
