Mountain range of San Pedro offers enormous possibilities for the lovers of rural tourism.

The mountain of San Pedro was until now another of what is great unknown factors of Estrémadure, although, each time they is more the visitors who approached until this sector and they propose it to companions and with knowledge like one of the destinies recommended.

Its more than 80.000 hectares are located in the most Western zone that Estrémadure and they are found, probably, between the most representative places that the Mediterranean forest. It acts of an abrupt sector, whose altitude varies between the 300 and 700 meters and where the pasture of Estrémadure abounds. Between their mountains we can underline "Cold Mountain", put abundance at the border with Portugal, and the mountain which the name inherits, "the Mountain of San Pedro", named in 1989 Zones of Special Protection of Birds (ZEPA).

The Mountain of San Pedro is considered by the experts the best representation flora and associated fauna the forest and the Mediterranean heather, probably, of all the peninsula Iberian. Its habitats are in a splendid state of conservation and moreover give refuge to a great number of species threatened of extinction.

Although the oak (Quercus rotundifolia) is the dominant arborescent species, the climatology and the rate of ground supported in a great measurement the development and the distribution by the zone of the oak - cork (Quercus suber). It is for that which it "cork" constitutes one of the principal economic engines of the sector. In the higher part we will find also other species like madroños, durillos, labiérnago, will jaras, heathers, etc.... and in the close zones with the rivers and rivers it is not strange to find small forest alders, like willows, ashes and tamujos. It should be stressed that the thicket presents an especially good state of conservation, which provides to this zone important richness landscape.

But the large star of this sector is undoubtedly the Imperial Eagle Iberian (aquila heliaca). It is the EC principal point of development everywhere in the world for a species like this one, declared in danger of extinction (they live here more than 15% of the world population). Other important species are black vulture (aegypius monachus) (it constitutes the more important zone for its development in the area after Monfragüe), alimoche (neophron percnopterus), fitted eagle (hieraetus pennatus), real eagle (aquila chrysaetus), eagle will culebrera (circaetus gallicus), real Milan (milvu migrans), peregrine falcon (falco peregrinus), real owl (bubo bubo), elanio blue (flanus caeruleus), white stork (ciconia ciconia), black stork (ciconia will nigra), etc.

Moreover, this sector is bathed by innumerable rivers and riachuelos which provides to the great landscape quantity of contrasts between water and the ground. Of all the most important is undoubtedly the river Coupe, already not only by its indubitable importance and flow, but, because it is also used as natural border with our Portugal neighbour during a great number of kilometres.

But if all this is not sufficient so that are appropriate the need for visiting it, this sector offers to us moreover the greatest concentration of dolmens of all Western Europe, in more than one acceptable state of conservation, For this reason, they were well declared of Cultural Interest with the category of Megalithic Enclosure. There are several roads recommended, mainly since Valence of Alcántara, where the courses are indicated perfectly. In these last we will discover some dolmens big size in very good state which us will transport at very primitive times. The contiguous Portuguese grounds with these of Estrémadure are also place of concentration of these monuments.

Of all that precedes can be deduced, without fear to fall into an ambiguity, which the landscape richness of this zone is impressive. It is certain that it will make the delights of the ventilators in visit to botany, mycology, larger and smaller hunting, and the walking or simply with those which enjoy with the contact with nature.
