In the Villa of Alburquerque, declared artistic historical unit, and very near at the Portuguese border, takes place each year the Medieval Festival.

This festival of summer takes place in the second fortnight of August (two weekends) in a superb environment, transformed these days medieval downtown with the Moon Castle like protagonist.

The idea of this festival appears in an attempt to recover its historical roots, their culture, his admirable inheritance, like its traditions and habits with the objective paramount to reinforce the tourist, economic development.

This event which is carried out since 1994 is organized by the Popular University of Alburquerque and the Town hall, although also the Office of Culture advisers and Inheritance of the Parliament of Extremadura collaborate economically, the Provincial Delegation of Badajoz and obviously private organizations of this locality. Undoubtedly this would not be possible without collaboration not involved in many groups of neighbours.

In the various workshops of the U.P.AL one works out all the necessary one for environment and decoration of the various scenes where the Festival will take place. Some are Workshop forges and joinery (Tournament), workshop of puppets, workshop of cloakroom, manual workshop, workshop of embroideries, make-up and hairstyle, workshop of decoration, theatre, etc. In each one of them one works out a part of the history of this festival.

The scene of this Festival is developed in the Gothic district, the walled enclosure and what you cannot miss, the Castle of the Moon. Courteous, of the knights, loqueteux, profiteur again perceive the life in scenes of the Jewish district, Castle or in the walled enclosure. Many visitors (more than 15.000 last years), live again within this monumental framework one time, and at the same time admire and know the inheritance of these people of Extremadura.

This great event "the White Eagle" is initiated with the representation of work, works of the Miguel d' Extremadura Murillo, in whom intervene more than 200 neighbours and directed by Diego Valle. This work recreates harassing with the castle of Alburquerque by Don Alvaro de Moon, to obtain the output of the infants of Aragon, Don Enrique and Don Pedro, which had occupied the fortress. It is represented in the court of weapons of the Castle.

The next weekend, one can visit houses acclimatized in the medieval district to old style, taverns, synagogues, boutiques, etc and in the Castle an alive museum, where one represents scenes of the history of this city. The streets are decorated with elements with the time. This day finishes with a medieval concert in the Church of Holy María of the Market.

Saturday, principal day, since the first hours of the morning the medieval district reaches its splendour, many leprous, beggars, beautiful ladies, courteous saunter in the narrow lanes of this admirable framework. Moors, Jews and Christians coexist and divide a wine in many the houses laid out by these historical streets.

The afternoon arrives the great moment, the pasacalle which traverses the streets extraparois. The thousands of participants shine the behaviours which with illusion made with care throughout the year.

At the end of this one, the action continues with a sale of slaves in the place of Holy María of the Market. On the southern slope of the Castle, one develops the medieval market.

But, the drama and blood surround the night. Tournaments, fights of knights to foot with various weapons, the tournaments indicators with horse, and after this, you dances of blackberries, the marriages, banquets akelarres, of the cars of faith... will be developed throughout the night. The visitor will be completely collected by this illusion which transports us towards the past. The emotion is been useful.
