La Fala
A linguistic phenomenon that has been declared Bien de Interés Cultural

Lost towns and rural places with a very special flavor.

If you are in Extremadura in full August or July, go to Sierra de Gata, in the north-Westerner of Extremadura, you will be able to bathe in one of its of natural throats, enjoy its gastronomy, its pretty villages, with its typical architecture with gate of granite and wood frameworks, its craft industry, etc.

Sierra de Gata doesn’t look like nothing of Extremadura and it doesn’t look like Castilla either, although it is frontier with it in north and Portugal in the West. This sector, of picturesc topography, it is composed by 20 comunes: Acebo, Cadalso, Cilleros, Descargamaría, Eljas, Gata, Hernán Pérez, Hoyos, Moraleja, Perales del Puerto, Robledillo de Gata, San Martín de Trevejo, Santibáñez el Alto, Torre de Don Miguel, Torrecilla of Los Ángeles, Valverde del Fresno, Vegaviana, Villamiel, Villanueva of the Sierra, Villasbuenas de Gata.

If someone ask us to underline some of these communes by holding account with their special beauty, perhaps, at the risk to be short, should indicate to us: Hoyo, Gata, Robledillo de Gata, Trevejo and Santibáñez El Alto. If we speak, on the other hand, of their popular architecture, we must undoubtedly refer to the five who were declared of historical artistically Interest, for the exceptional conservation of its historical helmets: Gata, Hoyos, Robledillo de Gata, San Martín de Trevejo and Trevejo.

In addition, as curiosity it should be mentioned that Eljas, San Martín de Trevejo and Valverde del Fresno have a common denominator, dialect "Fala" influences old kingdoms of Leon and Portugal, a branch of the galaique-Portuguese.

Its architecture is very remarkable: houses, mills with oil, bragged of houses (with the shield family), palate, churches, etc. The zahurdón, a construction of Celtic origin which is distributed by the entire sector and which some associations and institutions of the sector currently took as logo. It is symbol of the architecture of these grounds; it acts as a refuge of stone shepherds built on the circular plant.

Between the religious buildings we must underline the churches. Ntra. Sra. of Angeles in Acebo and Buen Varón in Hoyos. The latter seems one of the oldest religious stamps of the sector of Gata and contains an impressive baroque altarpiece. Are much the remainders which point out the military past of the zone: The Castle of Santibáñez el Alto, the Castle of Eljas, the Castle of Trevejo and the Tower of Almenara, Gata. Its wet Mediterranean climate, provides to the Sector an exceptional natural richness, abounds of rivets, with the chestnut trees, as well as the typical forest Mediterranean but mixed with madroños, jaguarzos, heathers, and jarales or will cornicabras.

Natural enclaves of priority natural interest are the Chestnut grove of the Thicket, in the Valley of San Martín de Trevejo, Cervigona in Acebo and the Mountain of Sta. Olalla between Cilleros and Hoyos. Crystalline Water is undoubtedly one of the large protagonists of Gata, not only these are its refreshing throats that there are in almost each village, their currents, swimming pools natural, but also dam Borbollón, in the term of Santibáñez the Alto, conceived initially, in the Fifties, for the hydro-electric production and the irrigation, which makes it possible the sector to lay out a large variety of fruit and vegetables. It is now also a place where various especially sporting tourist activities are developed. In this marsh there is a small island in the centre of the water which is used as nesting and breeding of some birds. It is a much visited zone by scientists and ornithologists or simply lover of nature.

There are a total of 14 natural swimming pools, distributed in 5 valleys: the valley of Árrago, which contains moreover a biological reserve of vulture black; the valley of Jálama; the split of Acebo; the split of Gata; the valley of Tralgas.

In the landscape of Gata one notices something elaborate by the hand of the man: squares, made to slow down the erosive action on the ground, by seeking the agricultural use of the ground which exists in those outstanding.

Sierra de Gata has also a great artisan tradition; as sample of that are fitments of spindles, authentic filigrees facts with wire, than decorate the ajuares, with a special reputation with Acebo and Hoyos. Also underline the basket making of Cadalso, the heights of wood of Eljas, the goldsmiths of Master, the cabinetmakers, craftsmen of leather and manufacturers craftsmen of musical instruments (flutes, sweets, tambourines, etc.).

The legend says that the Moors continued and overcome by the Christians had to give up these grounds, and that before to have gone they buried multitude of treasures here and that they were thus regretted: "Jálama, Jalamita, I do not cry for you but for the money and the gold which remains in you".
