LA FALA IN SIERRA DE GATA AND THE ISLAND OF THE WORDS

An own language for a small territory.

The Person is a being of word, and here, in the Mountain of Gata and at this border, the word known as is worth its gold weight.

Frontier sector, between Portugal and the old Kingdom of Leon, the Mountain of Gata offers the linguistic singularity a dialectical small island on the same tape, with Jálama or Xálima: "the FALA" of the three Places, transition or mixture between gallego-portuguese, the Western astur-leones and the Castilian, with three local alternatives: the lagarteiru of Eljas (Ace They), Valverdeiru de Valverde del Fresno (Valverdi) and the mañegu or chapurrau of San Martín de Trevejo (Holy Martín de Trevellu).

A linguistic phenomenon which was well declared of Cultural Interest, which drew the attention of Federico Onís, Ramón Menéndez Pidal and of Leite de Vasconcelos. This last suggests that the first language that one spoke in this sector was the Portuguese, by the proximity who links us, while having been imposed on this regional language (Western Leon) for political causes: "It is obvious that the inhabitants of the three populations speak Spanish concomitantly with" A Fala ".

This one use it between them; when they treat with personnel cultivated, or foreigners they use the Spaniard, and the same thing make when they will request, and when it is generally sung.
