PROTECTED SPACES IN SIERRA DE GATA, EXTREMADURA.

Natural spaces for the contemplation and to enjoy.

Sierra de Gata lays out an exceptional natural richness. It acts of a small network of spaces protected from great biological and paysagistic interest which will make the delights of the lovers of nature.

In 1977 whole the territory of this sector was included by the ICONA in the Open Inventory of Natural Spaces of Special Protection. And it is not occasion, since its limit with Portugal is the natural reserve of Malcata and its northern limit coincides with the Landscape Protected from the Plantation of oaks, already in the province of Salamanca.
Most important are:  

Ornithological reserve of the Dam Borbollón.

In the municipal term of Santibáñez the Halt, one finds the marsh of Borbollón, surrounded by a wide pasture of oaks, oak-of-cork and oaks, like fields of cereal ground not irrigated and pastures.

What in theory was conceived like a work intended to produce a certain quantity of electric power and to support the irrigation in plans of development conceived and started there by the Fifties, changed early, almost accidentally, an enclave of special natural importance.

It precisely was of half of the marsh, in a small island which resisted that impassive believed of water, where little by little one creates a vast space intended the nesting, the breast feeding and the development of an important community of birds in report/ratio of one or the other manner with the aquatic environment. There we find Garza Royal, Milan Noire, Garcillas Buyeras (1.200 pairs), Garceta Commune or the White Stork. Anátidas is sector of winter for Grues, (ducks, Ánades, etc.) and any type of Láridos (Gulls).

This space was protected with various mechanisms which are considered in the plan of territorial installation and place very visited by scientific groups and ventilators with ornithology. It is currently a biological reserve managed jointly by the SEO and ADENEX.  

Biological reserve of the Black Vulture in the Valley of Árrago.

The Biological Reserve of the Black Vulture is entered the municipal terms Cadalso, Descargamaría, Santibáñez the Halt and of Robledillo de Gata. The reserve was declared "Important Sector for the Birds". This recognition of category is established on the basis of of cataloguing SEO and I.C.B.P.

As its proper name indicates, this zone of the Valley of Árrago changed one of the fundamental enclaves for the development of the Black colonies of Vultures. It is important to underline it, since it acts of the north-most Western situation that all the Iberian Peninsula.

Independently of the Black Vulture, we can also find other species, especially of the family of the raptors. To establish its nests and to raise with its descent use the escarped slopes, to which the man can have access with difficulty.

Landscape reserve of the Jálama Mountain.
 
The Jálama Mountain is one of these obliged points of step for the visitor. It has an altitude of 1492 meters, and probably lay out of gratifying reasons landscape, those more beautiful than the sector. To that not only the flora contributes, where we will be able to find species singular, but also a rich person and varied fauna.

Biological reserve of Sierra de Gata.

Sierra de Gata was declared Reserve Biological in 1988 by ADENEX.

It is a populated zone of Mountains. With a maximum altitude which rode the thousand five hundred meters, all are located between the sector of Hurdes and our close country, Portugal. Abound slate and the granite, the forests of oaks, oak-of-cork, chestnut trees and oaks. We find also large pine forests, produces mainly repopulation and vast sectors of heather.

Not only it constitutes the point more the north-Westerner of the peninsula where to locate zones of nests and development of the Black Vulture, moreover its zoogeographic importance is extraordinary, since it allows its expansion towards Castilla-Leon and Portugal. We can also find here the Falcon Bee-keeper, the Fitted Eagle, the Black Stork, Iberian Lynx, etc.....
