The Basilica of Sta. Lucía of Trampal is located very close to the Source of Trampal, which it inherited the name. It acts of a beautiful place located in the chest of the mountain of the Sentinel, in the municipal term of Alcuéscar. This place is with some four kilometres of the way of Roman origin with to which we call today "Via the Money" and which traverses Estrémadure de North in South Some understood announced the possibility that there is in the past a branch which would arrive to the population of Trujillo while passing by the zone of Trampal or not very far from her.
It is calculated that it was built about the middle of century VII and is undoubtedly one of the best exhibitors of architecture hispanovisigode of all the Iberians Peninsula. In fact, it is the only basilica of this type which is preserved in foot of the entire southern zone. It is possible that its construction is carried out on another temple pagano Roman origin, or while benefiting from the granite sillares of somebody dismounted not very far from there. In fact, the Basilica is built in its totality with sillares re-used pertaining to a certain building much older. There are a lot of Romans inscriptions which we can find in their interior. And on the basis of these inscriptions, some experts precisely announced the possibility of a preceding existence in this place or not very far from him, of a called Roman population Turóbriga and a sanctuary devoted to the Ataecina goddess.
It proves to be curious the fact that until very little neither time ago, nor even one had certainty of the existence of this temple. People of the place knew the ruins of the old building whose crumbling appeared to be more close than far, but anybody, up to 1980, was not conscious of its historical importance. The building belonged to the Clergy up to 1835. In this moment, and like fruit of famous confiscation of Mendizábal, it passed to particular hands. In last time one had managed to use like stable and refuge of peasants. After their "discovery" the authorities take letters in the business. The Parliament of Extremadura declares it Good Cultural Interest and promotes her restoration and studies it.
Construction is a clear exhibitor of the style Hispanic Visigoth. Primitive church of Sta. Lucía one preserves only his core. We know, thanks to the archaeological excavations carried out which it laid out in addition to side rooms which already only one preserves today his plant. It also had two porches also disappeared in the entries north and south. Take into account a central body, which one reaches in first authority, divided three very narrow ships which were today in its time separated by disappeared pillars and in the primitive situation of which one placed granite sillares. Then we find the small space which was probably used of chorus through which we reach a narrow ship laid out perpendicularly, the cruising, covered by six arcs out of twelve columns. This one, made the functions of corridor with access to the three apses of which the head is made up. In the central cavity one placed the furnace bridge and it is possible that the two side ones were useful like sacristy. The use eminently monacal which can be interview the shape and the distribution of the building, is reinforced by the two access doors to cruising laid out, most probably, for exclusive use of the clergy. The small central ship makes it possible to suppose a weak laic population, being a separate place.
The Basilica of Sta. Lucía of Trampal is one of these small treasures which guard our ground. We are sure that the visit will be pleasure of much.
