The traveller will feel astonished when it enters for the first time the place of Garrovillas, it is an imposing place. It is the prototype of the rural architecture of the middle Ages.

It is one of the twelve best places of Spain. Not without reason it was used as natural scene in more than one cinematographic film. We advise his visit because we are sure that you will be magic.

This place, declared Artistic Historic building by the Parliament of Extremadura, is an open space of more than 4000 m2 of irregular plant, which was used as union between two urban cores, that of the parish of Pedro Saint and that of the parish of Sta. María. Five streets give to the place, some of them still marked out with the entry of the place by an pointed arc, in which one installed in the past the large doors to close the place and to use it like arenas with bulls.

The bullfights of bulls were a gift which the Messrs of city made, the counts de Alba de Listes, on the subjects, to pay the "diezmos" (tax to be paid). Nowadays one still uses the place for this festival.

The arcs of the place are constant in columns of granite and arcs of a half - not built out of brick. In the higher plant, a picture window gallery, also formed by columns and arcs. Since there the seism which was suffered in 1755 the place is an arc not easily balanced.

Some of the houses of the place are of the XV century, the Gothic sketch and with influence of Arab art, but the majority is in the century XVI and XVII. The chimneys are admirable, there is monumental of two bodies.

In the place we find the station of the town council, place where in the past the ecclesiastics of many churches met, cleans and brotherhoods.

On the right station of the town council, an invaluable Gothic house, with a double picture window completed by a heraldic shield of Perero.

And one of the most significant buildings which are vis-à-vis in the Place it is the Palate of the Counts d' Alba de Listes, of former Messrs of city. Nowadays this palate is Hospedería of luxury which is worth the sorrow to visit or to be lodged in it. Garrovillas had the fairs made famous, and this Place was used to put forward them, in it one saw tradesmen, arrieros and traders with products like the cocoa, leather, the indigo, seeds, etc.

Garrovillas was a flowering city, which had ten already tannery where one bronzed leather, and twenty-six weaving looms devoted to weave fabric made at the house.

As you see, the Place was so large like its flowering city, and it offers a sample to us of what was in other time the everyday life of its inhabitants.

To attend the festivities with bulls since the balconies which gave to the place was sample of social status. It was so important that some owners sold their house without transmitting the rights of sights, they held for them and even for their heirs. In the zone of the place the inns were located.

But not only were seen the festivities with bulls in this Place, there were also stage performances. In connection with theatre, we must mention another jewel Garrovillas has: The Farmyard of Comedies, a wonder of the typical style of the Century of Spanish, and different Gold with the other farmyards to have a third level or a stage to see the representations. This building was rehabilitated fortunately for its re-use like theatrical scene, inaugurating it in 1991.
