The calendar of festival of Extremadura is so vast like the great number of villages and cities which make it up. These popular demonstrations and festivals are very touching, not only by the hospital character of the population of Extremadura, but also by the respect towards the traditions and the habits inherited their ancestors, who continue persisted in the topicality. Each one of these festivities, romerías, processions, or habits are an admirable excuse to know the cultural inheritance of these grounds. The Parliament of Extremadura recognized some of these festivities with the title of Festivities of Tourist Interest of Extremadura, being very original festivals in some of her acts, some ancestral, by the great participation and being of great tourist attraction. This one is the case of the festivities which we then will detail.
The year of festival starts with Saint-Sebastian, martyr very held in Extremadura with particular acts, as it is the case for "Carantoñas", in Acehúche (Cáceres). It acts people disguised with skins goats and ewe and masks also of skin, of which they hang ears, let us pepper dry, etc. Those accompany in Saint-Sebastian in the procession, with those "will regaoras", of the tamborilero and marksmen, in one of the most significant acts of this festivity.
Very popular festivities in our people are the Carnivals, moments of joy, disguise, music, and in the case of Villanueva of Vera (Cáceres), with proper name, the "Pero Palo". The streets of this locality change the scene where one develops the last days of "Pero Palo", wash-bottle carried out with rag and wood head, which will be crushed by the people, will be condemned to death, forks and spoons of cloths, and finally flaring, all this surrounded of a great atmosphere of participation and joy.
One of the best carnivals of the Peninsula is the Carnival of Badajoz, festivity which is underlined by the combinations and high hats colours, luxurious that the comparsas carry, murgas and choruses which will take share at the time of the Large Procession, Sunday of Carnival. Another of the significant aspects of these festivities is the massive participation of the indigenous population, as from abroad who approach up to now, to know these splendid carnivals.
In addition, the sincere religiosity of our people become clear in many demonstrations of festival (owners, saints, etc), which arrive at its roof in the Easter Week, being culminating moments Life, Passion and Death of Jesus. In the town of Cáceres, is an event of great beauty and voyorism, so much by the antiquity of its steps, as by its processions which traverse the streets, adarves, of its Old medieval Helmet. Especially imposing they are the processions of the nights and the paddles, between them that of Black Christ.
In the North of Cáceres, in Valverde of Vera, in Holy Week, a tradition ancestral, the paddle of Thursday to Good Friday takes place, leave Empalaos, penitents, that to make pardoner its sins charge with their backs a beam (in the past a plough), at the same time as its chest goes covered with quite tight cables, and they traverse the traditional streets of Valverde, in the medium of a dark and respectful silence.
After the Easter Week, Monday of Passover takes place in Campanario (Badajoz), Romería of the Virgin of Pierre Écrite, one of most representatives so much by the variety of acts, like by its colour and spectacular. Most characteristic of this festivity are fit with body them pomposas which with very original artistic designs, carried out with roles of colours, will take share the great contest of fit with body. It will be divided subsequently into procession to the hermitage of the Virgin where will take place the popular romería, where the neighbours coexist and share their typical meals and wines. Very particular is the way of holding the Corpus Christi in Peñalsordo (Badajoz), festivity which goes up at the century XVI and which will rememorize the catch of the castle of the locality close to Hood to the Moors. In addition to the representation of various episodes of the catch of the castle, the most interesting moments of these festivities are: readings of the mojigangas, the procession, and formation of the human castle.
