SAN MATEO SQUARE, CÁCERES.

Of left to right. House of the Storks. Present Military Government. Temple of San Mateo. The Vanes Palace.

In upper of the old part, the San Mateo Square, a medieval enclosure par excellence.

We are already in the highest part of the old district, the St. Mateo Square, with the temple of the same name at the bottoms, almost completely raised in the S XVI, say that it occupies the site which occupied the Arab Mosque, and which was the first Christian construction. It unfortunately had several reforms which it has underprivileged enough, as that which intensified what is Gothic in its interior. The last reform with a great success cleaned the temple of ornamentations so much spurious. Its challengeable is of the sculptor Vicente Barbadillo, of 15th century. In the Place of San Mateo, the Alcazar of Almohades was located. In this Place one finds also the temple of San Pablo, modesty and tolerance arrived at this frontage in a perfect syncretism. It is today the Community of chocolate éclairs of fence about Sainte Claire, which return sugar refineries of delicious Extremadura: perrunillas (typical sweets from Extremadura), pastes, etc.

And vis-à-vis with this hermitage one raises proud the Tower of the House of the Storks, nowadays seat of the Military Government, the tower not lopped which privilege made it possible this tower to arrogantly remain in foot. At the time where Isabel the Catholic orders to cut it, one built this Tower by Diego d' Ovando, which was clearly defender of Isabel and against Beltraneja in the War of succession, and the support was thanked naturally.

The Wings Square, with the Aljive House Palace or the Wings. In a reform which was made of it one completed the frontage with these striking waste-gas mains which ceramic from Talavera and pináculos are completed with wings. In its interior the Palate keeps a jewel of the Muslim art: The Cistern almoravide, of which the goal was to keep rainwater. The Palate of the Wings is since years the Seat of the Provincial Museum, and offers to in visit multitude of museum rooms, since prehistoric remainders, while passing by Roman civilization, to collections of popular art of Extremadura.
